Adi Kailash Yatra 2026: Medical support for pilgrims
The Adi Kailash Yatra is a revered pilgrimage to one of the most sacred sites in the Himalayan region. Located in the Pithoragarh district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand, Adi Kailash is believed to be a divine abode of God Shiva. Each year, thousands of pilgrims undertake a multi-day journey to the foot of this sacred mountain.
The journey, however, is physically demanding. Due to the thin air at these altitudes, a large number of pilgrims experience headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, and low blood oxygen levels. The remote terrain and unpredictable mountain weather further add to the challenges of the journey. Reliable medical support is therefore essential for every pilgrim along the route.
Vishav Manav Ruhani Kendra (VMRK) has been serving pilgrims during the Adi Kailash Yatra since 2024 and is grateful to the local administration for granting another opportunity to do so this year. As part of this service, VMRK is operating a medical camp at Jolingkong, the final base camp of the yatra. Situated at an elevation of approximately 4,389 meters, the free medical camp operates 24 hours daily. From here, pilgrims trek a further 2–3 kilometers to the base of Adi Kailash, at an altitude of around 5,600 meters.
The camp will operate from May 16, 2026, to June 10, 2026, to offer free consultations, medicines, and first aid to all pilgrims in need. It is staffed by a 9-member team that includes medical professionals and VMRK volunteers. Equipped with oxygen concentrators, oxygen cylinders, and other essential medical equipment, there is also a 3-bed clinical treatment center for pilgrims requiring closer medical attention.
This blog post will be updated with more details after the services conclude.
