The festival of Mahashivratri is derived from three Sanskrit words: Maha (great), Shiva, and Ratri (night), meaning “The Great Night of God Shiva.” Falling on the 14th day of the Hindu month of Phalguna (February–March in the Gregorian calendar), this festival marks the day when God Shiva, the supreme being, married Goddess Parvati.
Each year, devotees celebrate this occasion with deep devotion, engaging in various rituals and spiritual practices. This includes worshipping the Shiva Lingam (the physical manifestation of God Shiva) and observing a fast throughout the day. Special to this occasion is the night vigil, during which people stay awake, listen to hymns, chant sacred verses, and meditate in reverence, expressing their deep devotion.
